Strega Nona's Magic Ring by Tomis DePaola - ADVISABLE

DePaola, Tomie Strega Nona’s Magic Ring. PICTURE BOOK Simon and Schuster, 1979. $18. 9781481477611

Big Anthony helps Strega Nona on her farm and one night when there is a village dance, he sees Strega Nona slip a magic ring on her finger that makes her beautiful.  A while later, Big Anthony figures he will borrow Strega Nona’s magic ring (without asking) and enjoy dancing at the village as a handsome man.  Big Anthony is so handsome at the dance that the women don’t want to let him go, and no matter how hard he tries Big Anthony can’t get the ring unstuck from his finger.  Eventually Strega Nona helps him and everything works out.

This reprint of Big Anthony and the Magic Ring is entertaining and reminds the reader to be happy with who they are.  The illustrations are classic DePaola with folksy drawings and funny facial expressions.  My teenage daughter still loves DePaola books-he’s timeless.
