Circus Mayhem (Animal Crackers Prequel) by Scott Sava -OPTIONAL

Sava, Scott Circus Mayhem (Animal Crackers Prequel), 91 pages.  GRAPHIC NOVEL.  First Second, 2017.  $16. Language: G (0 swears); Mature Content: G; Violence: G.  978-1-626-72504-1

Owen is taken to the circus by his parents, so he can be babysat by an Uncle he has never met –Uncle Buffalo Bob. But Bob isn’t there and Owen is taking on a wild tour of the circus. The performers discover that Bob is missing, kidnapped by the evil Contorto. When Own is locked up to keep him safe, he discovers a box of animal crackers and eats one –starting the greatest adventure of his life.

This story was non stop action with little to no character building. A big part of the plot is that people only want to come to the circus to see the animals (I personally think that is the most depressing part of any circus) –but it doesn’t really make sense. I think readers will like the idea of being able to transform into animals. The cover looks dated and the artwork is just so-so (a bit of a letdown considering it was published by the high quality First Second).
