The Brightest Star in the North by Meredith Rusu - ADVISABLE

Rusu, Meredith The Brightest Star in the North: The adventures of Carina Smyth, 234 pages.  Disney Press, 2017.  $13.  Language: G; Mature Content: G; Violence: PG (ghosts and fighting)

Carina Smyth was left on the doorstep of an orphanage with just a old diary as a token of her lost family.  Restless and persistent, Carina craved the knowledge she needed to understand what legacy.  She constantly pushed herself into places she wasn’t wanted, especially in a time when girls who were educated were considered to be witches.  When she finally sets out on her own to follow a clue to the island of Saint Martins, she becomes involved with Captain Jack Sparrow as he also tries, in his bumbling way, to find a way to restore his previous fortunes.

The first half of the book is a great backstory to the history of Carina Smyth.  At page 139, her story joins with the movie, occasionally bringing a different perspective to the action.  This works great as a supplement for those who can’t get enough of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
