Pete With No Pants by Rowboat Watkins - ADVISABLE

Watkins, Rowboat Pete With No Pants, PICTURE BOOK. Chronicle Books 2017. $16.99. Content: G.

Pete is an elephant who doesn’t like to wear pants.  He’s trying to discover who he is by comparing himself to boulders (I’m big and grey and not wearing pants . . . I’m a boulder) but when boulders are boring he tries to identify as something else, maybe a pigeon or a squirrel - they are grey and don’t wear pants either, right?.  Mom shows up and makes him put his pants back on.

Very silly with knock knock jokes and speech bubbles, but it gets muddled somewhere in the middle.  The message of be true to yourself wasn’t lost on this reader, but I didn’t find it all that funny. However, my three year old thought it was hilarious and played knock-knock on on the pages, and laughed at the illustrations. Who would have thought?
