Ghost by Jason Reynolds - ESSENTIAL

Reynolds, Jason Ghost, 181 pages.  Atheneum Books For Young Readers (Simon & Schuster) 2016. $13.99. Language: PG (6 swears, 0 "f"); Mature Content: PG; Violence: PG.

Castle "Ghost" Crenshaw has learned the course of your life can change in one night.  For Ghost, that night taught him how to run.  It is the one thing he knows how to do.  When Ghost gets the chance to run on a track team, he realizes he can be a part of something special.  He realizes, "... you can't run away from who you are, but what you can do is run toward who you want to be."

This is a great narrative about a boy struggling with anger at his lot in life and the injustice of his situation.  It touches on bullying, anger issues, and chance encounters with people who challenge us to rise above our circumstances.  I loved this story and would recommend it for grades 6 and up.
