Wilder Boys: The Journey Home by Brandon Wallace - OPTIONAL

Wallace, Brandon Wilder Boys: The Journey Home, 185 pages.  Aladdin (Simon), 2016.  $17.  Content: G (danger and tension, but nothing graphic).

Taylor and Jake have been living with their father in very primitive conditions in the wilds of Grand Teton National Park, but winter is on its way and both boys are a little skeptical that they will be well prepared to live through the snows.  When they find out their dad has a cell phone, they call home, just to listen to their dead mom’s voice on their answering machine.  To their surprise, Mom answers.  She wasn’t dead like her boyfriend Bull told them.  Now the boys are determined to leave the mountains and make their away back to Pennsylvania to their mom.  The challenges on the way back are just as daunting as what they faced on their way to find their father.

Do you remember how disappointed you were when you watched Mad Max: Fury Road and the escapees just turned around and headed back to the same place they came from?  Yep – that’s the feeling I had when I saw where this book was heading.  The dangers aren’t as compelling this time around.  Young readers, however, will probably be just fine with the new adventures.
