Watch the Sky by Kirsten Hubbard - ADVISABLE

Hubbard, Kirsten Watch the Sky, 262 pgs. Disney Hyperion, 2015. $16.99. Language: G (no swears); Mature Content PG; Violence G.

Jory’s stepfather, Caleb, sees signs: signs that tell him what to do to keep his family safe.  Those signs mean that Jory now spends his nights digging a tunnel in the bottom of a canyon that will be loaded with food.  Besides Caleb, Jory’s family consists of his mother, his new little brother Ansel, and a “secret sister,” Kit, who was found in their pumpkin patch eating pumpkin guts and seeds and who doesn’t speak. Jory is allowed to go to school where he begins to realize that his family may be  strange.  Caleb keeps a strong grip on his family to protect them, but as his prophecies and the tunnel come closer to fruition, Jory needs to decide what his future will be.

The book was engaging and believable and moved at a good pace.   The book deals well with the importance of family and safety and perception.  Jory is a likeable character.  This book works well with current feelings of paranoia about big government and the loss of control over world problems.
