As the top of their food chain, ospreys are susceptible to
added effects of environmental pollution - from DDT until the 1970’s to heavy
metal poisonings from old mine waste, their population struggles to find a
strong balance. Other challenges from modern life also add to the
problem. Scientists in Montana are working hard to find solutions that
can implemented all over the country to help the osprey and other birds of prey
find a way to survive.
I believe this is Ms. Patent’s first entry into the
Scientists in the Field series, though not her first non-fiction book for
children. While the narrative doesn’t flow as smoothly as most of the
other books in the series, it still contains a wealth of information about
ospreys and scientists’ efforts to preserve the species. Worthy for most
collections based on that.
