Nobody But Us by Kristin Holbrook - OPTIONAL

Halbrook, Kristin Nobody But Us, 288 pgs. HarperTeen (HarperCollins), 2013. Language - R (95 swears, 24 "f"), Sexual Content - PG-13; Violence - PG;

Zoe and Will have tough lives, but they have found happiness in their love for each other. Deciding that all they need is this love, Zoe and Will leave their problems behind and drive away together. Soon, though, they have to come down from cloud nine and realize that life is more complicated than they thought. They can't afford to be naive anymore.

I didn't enjoy this book for a few reasons. First of all, the vulgar language was frequent and unnecessary. Beyond that, it was hard to read about two kids crash into reality. Life is tough and we make mistakes, but it was hard to see how happiness receded the the farther Zoe and Will traveled. Finally, there wasn't much action going on. I could follow the steps Zoe and Will took along their journey, which helped the story flow nicely, but the journey itself was full of both Zoe and Will making things harder by questioning themselves in order to give everything to the other. It's a nice sentiment, but the lesson here is that you can't love someone else if you don't love yourself, too. One thing I did like about this book is that they abstain from having sex, unlike the main characters in many other love stories.
