Maid of Wonder by Jennifer McGowan - OPTIONAL

McGowan, Jennifer Maid of Wonder, 326 pages.  SImon & Schuster, 2015.  $18.  Language: G (1 swear, 0 ‘f’); Mature Content: G (kisses only); Violence: PG (some minor fighting action, two deaths undescribed).

Sophia Dee, not really the niece of famed astronomer John  Dee, is struggling to help the Queen while still keeping the true extent of her mystical powers secret.  If she reveals too much, the Church Investigators may have her eliminated, but if she doesn’t satisfy the Queen that she is helpful, she may lose her place as a Maid of Honor.  When John Dee and Nostradamus both come to court to interpret a prophecy that may be about the death of the Queen, Sophia is walking a very thin line indeed, especially because Dee brings along his assistant Marcus, and both young people are very drawn towards each other.

I had a slightly harder time with the #3 in the Maids of Honor series because of its mystical nature.  Angels, astral planes and such are not as much my thing.  But fans of the first two books will enjoy the Elizabethan setting and lengths Elizabeth has to go to keep her position in a “man’s” world.
