Into the Grey by Celine Kieran - OPTIONAL

Kiernan, Celine Into the Grey, 290 pages.  Candlewick, 2015.  $17.  Language: R (100+ swears, 4 ‘f’); Mature Content: G; Violence: PG (ghosts, possession).

Thankfully everyone in Patrick’s family survived the fire that burned down their house after their forgetful grandmother attempted to cook something on her own.  Now, however, the family is crammed into the place they usually only go for the long summer break.  Dad is commuting each week into the city and there is something very spooking going on.  Patrick’s twin, Dom, is not himself.  In fact, he really isn’t.  He has been possessed by a ghost - a boy who died many years ago and who is afraid of an another, very angry spirit in The Grey.  Strangely, this dead boy knows Pat’s Nan, and he is known by the old man that Dom and Pat saved from the sea.  What does the World War of 1914 have to do with their Nan, with the man, and with the boy?  Pat doesn’t really care, but he will do whatever he has to in order to save his twin.

Kiernan has written a very, very creepy novel - one that I think adults will appreciate more than most students.  Its creepy in that old, slow way that sneaks up on you and draws you down - not in the gory slasher way that is more prevalent nowadays.
