Girls Like Us by Gail Giles - OPTIONAL

Giles, Gail Girls Like Us, 210 pgs. Candlewick Press, 2014. $16.99.

Language: PG (10 swears, 0 Fs); Violence: PG13 (descriptions of rapes); Mature Content: PG13 (see violence).

Biddy and Quincy have both graduated from high school, but being special education students and wards of the state, they have been given jobs and are roommates.  But both have history; Biddy is afraid and Quincy is angry. Can these two young women who are very different, find they have common ground?

Written as recorded journal entries, alternating chapters from each girl, the spoken dialect is a bit cumbersome. However, the story is intriguing, heartbreaking and poignant.  The content is too mature for middle school, but too short and simple for a more mature reader.
