Sophie Scott Goes South by Alison Lester - ADVISABLE

Lester, Alison.  Sophie Scott Goes South.  PICTURE BOOK.  Houghton, Mifflin, Harcourt, 2013.  Content: G.

Based on the author’s own experience visiting Antarctica, the story is told by a make-believe character, nine-year-old Sophie Scott.  Sophie’s dad is a ship captain and she goes with him on an ice breaker boat to Antarctica to bring supplies to Mawson station.  Sophie’s story is in diary form and the voice sounds true to a child.  She describes what she sees: icebergs, wildlife, and life on the boat.  The artwork includes cartoon drawings and real life pictures.  An informative and fascinating look at a less-traveled area of the world.

EL K-3 – ADVISABLE.  Samantha Hastings, MA, MLS.
