Solstice by P.J. Hoover - ADVISABLE

Hoover, P.J. Solstice, 372 pgs. Tor Teen, 2013. Language - PG (34 swears, 0 "f"), Mature Content - PG-13; Violence - PG;

Piper cannot remember a time when her mother wasn't overprotective nor when the Global Heating Crisis didn't allow for fall and winter. Once her eighteenth birthday comes, Piper expects change, but she was hoping for a decrease in protection from the outside world, not a change of the world as she knew it. All of a sudden Piper has captured the attention of two boys, her best friend has gone crazy, and everyone can read Greek.

At first I was wary of Solstice because of the reincarnation of sorts of the Greek gods. I was afraid of a new myth or a drastic change that would be hard to swallow with my knowledge of Greek mythology. However, I ended up loving this story because it is compliant with the original myths while still giving a new spin on those stories. I also really liked that Hoover put in a lot of little details that could be overlooked because she didn't draw attention to them, but added so much to the story (for example, keep an eye out for Hermes).
