Iris and Walter and the Substitute Teacher by Elissa Haden Guest -- ADVISABLE

Guest, Elissa Haden Iris and Walter and the Substitute Teacher, illustrated by Christine Davenier. 44 pgs. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2004 (Reprint 2014). $3.99. Content: G.

When Iris discovers that her grandfather will be the sub for her classroom, she is thrilled. At first it is indeed fun, and she feels special for being able to help him. But as he learns the ropes, he begins to divide his attention more evenly among all of his students, and Iris feels left out. Maybe, she decides, it would be better to have her grandpa to herself after all.

This beginning chapter book has fairly large print, sweet illustrations, and an engaging story to keep children interested. It was especially nice to see Iris and her grandfather have a heart-to-heart talk after the subbing finished; the difficult conversation was approached in a delicate and satisfying manner.
