One Plus One Equals Blue by M J Auch - - ADVISABLE

Auch, M J One Plus One Equals Blue, 262 pgs. 2013. Henry Holt and Company. $16.99.  Language: G; (0 swears) Violence: G; Mature Content: G.

12-year-old Basil is a loner.  Fresh out of home-schooling, he realizes that he’s different, and the kids don’t even know about his synesthesia - -  he sees numbers as colors, which really messes up his math skills.  When Tenzie moves into the subdivision across the street, he finds a friend who understands him, but when his long-lost mother suddenly arrives from Hollywood, his world is turned upside down.

It’s nice to see a middle school story without content issues, but with a gripping story.  Although not about synesthesia, the story incorporates it well into a novel about family, abandonment, and friendships.  A good read for upper elementary and middle school.  EL, MS - ADVISABLE Lisa Librarian
