Outcasts United by Warren St. John-OPTIONAL

St. John, Warren, Outcasts United. Delacorte Press, 2012. Pgs. 226. INFORMATION.

In Clarkston, Georgia, more than half of the people living there are refugees. One day, Luma Mafleh, a young Jordanian woman educated in the United States, went for a drive and ended up in Clarkston, There, she saw boys everywhere trying to find any flat surface to play soccer. She moved to Clarkston and started a soccer team. This is the story of their first season and how the game of soccer helped the boys to bond with each other, adjust to living in the United States, and find a way to call their small, southern Georgia town home.

The excessive explanations of bureaucracy and unsupportive neighbors tend to take center stage over the impact this soccer team creation had on the boys. The lack of cultural background on the boys leaves the reader wanting for something more. Nevertheless, the story will inspire and delight those readers who like reading about soccer and underdog stories.EL (4-6), MS, HS. OPTIONAL.
