The Silence of our Friends by Mark Long & Jim Demonakos & Nate Powell -ADVISABLE

Long, Mark & Demonakos, Jim & Powell, Nate The Silence of our Friends, 208 pgs. First Second, 2012. $12.40. (Language-PG13 Swear Count: 25, Violence-PG; Sexual Content-G.)
This graphic novel is set in late 1960’s Texas, when civil rights are coming to a boiling point. It follows two families, a black family and white family. The heads of each have a different role in the same events, an activist and a reporter. After a student protest goes awry the resulting court battle over the death of a police officer is depicted.
If swearing (mostly in the form of the N word), is ok at your high school library, this would be a great book to add to your collection. Based on real events, this book offers insight into the everyday lives and motivations of the people involved. The visual representation of the action, the emotion, and even the songs-is brilliant. It would be an interesting and discussion provoking addition to curriculum.
