EL – ADVISABLE

This is the true story of a young girl, Zhongmei Lei, from a poor farming town in China who works hard to become a world renowned dancer. The book focuses on her audition for the Beijing Dance Academy and her first year there. The reader also learns about her life at home and her childhood memories.

I think student will enjoy reading about Zhongmei’s life, since it is so far removed from their own experiences. The author has provided a good balance of cultural references that will not overwhelm young readers. The hard work and determination of 11 year old Zhongmei doesn’t fail to inspire. I didn’t rate this book as Essential because I think the overriding dance theme will deter some potential readers.
