The Orphan by Anthony L. Manna - OPTIONAL

Manna, Anthony L. and Soula Miktakidou The Orphan: A Cinderella story from Greece, illustrated by Giselle Potter.  Schwartz & Wade (Random House),  2011.  Content: G.  PICTURE BOOK.  A young orphan girl is at the mercy of her stepmother.  When the prince comes to attend church in their village, the girl decides to take matters into her own hands.  The illustrations are sweet and the story has a few Greek cultural elements.  Be careful – this is not really a traditional Greek telling of the Cinderella tale.  While the story has Greek roots and the authors read some Greek-rooted Cinderella stories, they added modern conventions that warp the traditional tale.  This makes it fairly useless as an example of a Greek folktale, and instead makes it just a work of fiction.  EL – OPTIONAL.
