Icefall by Matthew J Kirby -ADVISABLE

Kirby, Matthew J Icefall, 336 pgs. Scholastic Press, 2011 (OCT). $11.46. (Language-G, Violence-G; Sexual Content-G.)
This story is set in an ice filled world of historical Norse/Viking style mythology. Solveig is a young girl in a tense situation. Not only is she hiding from war –along with her royal siblings, in a far away winter locked lodge –but she is the invisible child –neither beautiful nor necessary. The combination of hiding out, a large group of bored warriors and an unknown traitor causing trouble leads to much drama. Solveig finds solace in training to be a Skald, a storyteller and in her pet raven, Muninn. When the war comes to them, its time for Solveig to be put to the test.
This book is wonderful combination of a drama, mystery, coming of age, and mythology. Icefall has a haunting setting as well. It has dynamic tension on many levels, which makes it interesting, intriguing, and a page turner. I think students will love the story of this long ignored girl who chooses to make something of her life, rise above expectations, and exhibits bravery in the face of uncontrollable events.
