Hornbooks and Inkwells by Verla Kay - OPTIONAL

Kay, Verla Hornbooks and Inkwells, illustrated by S.D. Schindler.  Putnam (Penguin), 2011.  $17.  PICTURE BOOK.  Ms. Kay uses rhyme to compliment very detailed drawings of what a day, a week, a year looked like in a 1970’s schoolhouse.  I really adore the illustrations – you can learn a lot just by looking at them.  The short rhymes, however, do not convey enough information to really enjoy each page’s lesson.  I wish the author had gone with sentences instead.  EL – OPTIONAL.
