Crows and Cards by Joseph Helgerson

Helgerson, Joseph  Crows and Cards  344  pgs. Houghton Mifflin, 2009. $16.00   Rating: G.  Travel along with Zeb as he learns the hard lessons of the life as a gambler’s apprentice.  Meet characters such as the tricky Chilly Larpenteur, the wise Chief Standing Tenbears (and his beautiful daughter), a professor and his chickens, and a freedom-seeking slave who all play a role in teaching Zeb who he really is and can be.  This is a well-written and fun story that entertains, enlightens, and enriches.  Recommended for students and adults alike.  MS – ADVISABLE, Margaret W. – Middle School Teacher
