The Maze Runner by James Dashner - ADVISABLE

Dashner, James The Maze Runner, 384 p. Delacorte (Random House), October 2009. $16.99.

Violence: PG

MS, HS - ADVISABLE

Thomas has no memory of his life before he finds himself ascending, trapped within a darkened, metal box. At the end of his journey he finds a strange setting - a group of boys living within a Glade, surrounded by an unsolvable Maze; some of the boys have been there for two years. Thomas feels like he should know this place, but his incessant questions are unwelcome and danger comes in many forms. Thomas is one key, and the girl is the other, to unlocking this maze, but how can a trouble-maker like Thomas inspire the other boys to risk their lives? The boys (and girl) will need courage, cooperation and brains to solve the mystery of their strange existence.

You will be hard pressed to put this book down as it rushes from page to page, from danger to danger. Dashner has served up a great boy book (we ALWAYS need more of those) that will surely catch the imaginations of the Hunger Games, Unwind and Uglies crowd. But you'll have to wait until October to hand it out to your students! This is the first in a planned trilogy.
