A sunflower seed considers himself a bad seed and so do others because
he has bad manners. He explains that he wasn’t
always a bad seed, but he had some trials in his sunflower seed life that made
him grumpy and not considerate of others.
But he looks himself in the mirror and decides that he is going to try
and be a good seed. He isn’t always
perfect, but at least he is trying and that’s a good place to start.
The idea behind this book is cute—a bad seed
trying to mend his ways. I like the moral
of trying to do better and be kinder, even if it’s not perfect. The
illustrations are adorable and the expressions of the different seeds are cute. That
said, the time when he is traumatized (while almost being eaten at a baseball
game) was a bit dark and I’m not sure young kids get the play on the phrase “bad seed”.
