WarCross by Marie Lu - ESSENTIAL

Lu, Marie WarCross, 353 pages.  Putnam (Penguin), 2017.  $19.  Language: PG (18 swears, 0 ‘f’); Mature Content: G; Violence: PG (some danger, mostly virtual).

Emika just wanted to steal a valuable power-up from a virtual games so that she could sell it for the real money she needs to keep her life together.  But a glitch puts her right into the action and now she has the attention of the whole world.  Even more, she has the attention of Hideo Tanaka, the creator of the Warcross virtual gaming empire.  Hideo invites her to Japan to help him with a very secret project, but also offers her a place in the upcoming Warcross international championship – a place where fortunes can be made.  Can Emika prove that she belongs in the game, help Hideo with his project AND stay out of emotional and physical danger?  I don’t think so.

Lu joins the ranks of Conor Kostick (Epic) and VivianVandeVelde (Heir Apparent) writing excellent books based in virtual reality.  I was a little skeptical at first, but I settled in quickly and read until I couldn’t keep my eyes open.
