Rhymes with Doug by Chad Thompson- OPTIONAL

Thompson, Chad. Rhymes with Doug, PICTURE BOOK. Aladdin, 2016. $16.99. When Doug arrives home from school he discovers a special package has been delivered to him. He opens it to find a cute little bird named Otto, who can talk. There is a note to be careful about what you say because the bird is very dangerous. Doug introduces himself and Otto immediately begins telling Doug words that rhyme with his name. Doug is thrilled to have a talking bird, especially one who wants hugs, and magically makes a steaming mug of something delicious, as well as a pug puppy appear. But then, Otto rhymes Doug and slug and Doug is turned into a disgusting, green blob of a slug. Later, he’s a bug. Then Doug dug. It goes on like this until Doug is safe in bed and decides to give Otto a new home. The pictures in this book are very cute. They have a cartoonish look to them with a lot of bright colors. The characters all look very sweet and cuddly. I didn’t like how there were inconsistencies in how at first Doug was receiving the things that Otto was rhyming with his name and then, he was suddenly turned into them. It just didn’t really make sense. It would be a good book for discussing rhyming. PRE-K, EL (K-3)- OPTIONAL. Reviewed by Shay, School Librarian
