The Light of Christmas by Richard Evans - OPTIONAL

Evans, Richard Paul The Light of Christmas. Illustrated by Daniel Craig. PICTURE BOOK. Aladdin, 2016. $9.99. Content: G.

Alexander and his mother live in the hills outside the Christmas city of Noel. On Christmas Eve, Alexander has to walk many miles to see the Keeper of the Flame light the torch in the center of town that will spread the warmth of Christmas to the entire world. Alexander arrives late because he stops to help an old man who appears lost and hungry in the snow. When the Keeper of the Flame chooses the truest of all the gifts of  Christmas, he picks Alexander because Alexander stopped for the old man (the Keeper in disguise!)—clearly showing he understood the true meaning of the Season.

This is a beautiful story that has obvious Christian overtones in its Christmas message. The illustrations are of a style that will not readily appeal to children and the text is long on every page—making it a difficult read aloud for large groups. I think this book might be a great gift option for the holiday season but will not find a wide audience in a school library setting.

GIFT—OPTIONAL. Reviewer: TC
