Will and Jess’s father has dragged their family from their
comfortable farm in Illinois to chase a dream in California. First they must survive the slow passage
across hundreds of miles. Since the way
north is already closed for the winter, they are following the southern
route. Disagreement over their path
divides the already small wagon train and Will’s family takes the near fatal
route through what becomes known as Death Valley.
The Survivor series is a reprint from
Duey’s early writing days. This in
particular is a realistic, gritty look at the dangers of crossing the
plains. I know it is harder to get
students to read historical fiction right now, but the packaged series makes
this an easier bet, especially with male main characters.
