Ada lives next to the garbage dump for Asuncion, Paraguay,
where her family and many others eke out a living by sorting through the
garbage for recyclables. When her
grandmother hears about someone teaching music lessons, she sends Ada. Without enough instruments, however, there is
no way for everyone to practice. Also,
expensive instruments would be stolen in their impoverished village. Using the garbage around them, the fathers of
the students and others build instruments for the children and they cobble
together an orchestra and eventually get invited to play on world-wide stages.
This is the true, on-going, story of a group of children and
the man who helped them find something more than lives filled with
garbage. They are fundamentally changing
their way of life. What an inspiration
for young people and for adults. There
are references included for news stories and youtube clips of the orchestra, so
this would make an excellent lesson for any age.
