The War that Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley - ESSENTIAL

Bradley, Kimberly Brubaker The War that Saved my Life, 316 pgs. Penguin (Dial) 2015. $16.99. Language: G; (0 swears 0 Fs); Mature Content: G; Violence: PG.

10-year-old Ada was born with a clubfoot. Her Mam never lets her leave their London apartment and is emotionally and physically abusive. With Hitler’s Army threatening to invade England, her 6 year old brother Jamie is sent to the country to be safe, along with many other evacuated children. Ada runs away with him.  When no one in Kent chooses these two shabby, skinny, frightened children, they are assigned to an older woman, Susan, who has never had children, and really doesn’t know what to do with them.  Susan is kind, generous and the perfect guardian for these children, but Ada is in need of an operation on her foot, and no one can seem to contact the children’s mother; or is she not answering their letters on purpose?

This moving, beautiful historical fiction tells the story of the war fought on the home front, the brave citizens of Britain who helped the soldiers, cared for other people’s children, and defended their country.  But it’s also a story about love, family and community.  Well written, this page turner is delightful to read.  EL,  MS - ESSENTIAL Lisa Librarian
