The Day the Sun did not Rise and Shine by Mirjam Enzerink –OPTIONAL

Enzerink, Mirjam The Day the Sun did not Rise and Shine. Lemniscaat USA, 2015. $17.95
With dawn approaching, a little owl is so sleepy that he mistakes an opening into a dark attic for his bed. Expecting the sun to rise, so he could go to sleep, the Owl is surprised when it stays dark. After a search he discovers the “sun” in the attic and tries everything to convince it to rise and shine, so he can go to bed. What will it take to show the sun how important it is?
This is an extremely hard picture book featuring an adorable owl. The story is kind of sad, lonely, and dark. I found myself just feeling bad for the little owl. I could buy in that the owl was confused that he was in an attic (the illustrator did a great job with this), but then the owl knows how to turn on a light switch, what!? The illustrations are creative but have a dark undertone that I found quite dreary.
