Emma and the Blue Genie by Cornelia Funke - OPTIONAL

Funke, Cornelia Emma and the Blue Genie, illustrated by Kerstin Meyer. 90 pgs. Random House, 2014. $9.99. Content: G.

One night, Emma and her dog Tristan are sitting on the beach when she spots a bottle floating in the water which contains a sad blue Genie who has lost his powers.  An evil yellow Genie has captured the blue genie’s kingdom, stolen his nose ring (so he can’t grant wishes) and is holding everyone and everything hostage.  Emma volunteers to return with the genie on his flying carpet and try to help.

This simple tale, translated from German, would make a good first novel for a child moving beyond picture books. Although fully illustrated , this story is for the much younger reader but the vocabulary takes this out of the beginning readers hands into bedtime story or read aloud territory. Not as exciting as I expected from Funke (Dragon Rider, Thief Lord, Inkheart)
