Freedom Summer by Deborah Wiles - ADVISABLE

Wiles, Deborah  Freedom Summer, illustrated by Jerome Lagarrigue  PICTURE BOOK. Atheneum, 2014, 2001.   $17.99.   Content: G.

A young white boy and a young black boy are best friends during a time of strict segregation.  They know how to work around the adults rules so that they can enjoy their time together.  One day they hear that the local pool is going to be open to all colors, but when they arrive, the town has decided to fill it with paving tar instead of let black people use it.  For the first time, the white buy sees the world through his friend’s eyes.

Wiles’s book is a powerful look at segregation.  This title, along with The Taste of Colored Water and a few others are boons to any lesson about this subject.
