The Taking by Kimberly Derting - OPTIONAL

Derting, Kimberly The Taking, 357 p. Harper Teen, 2014. $18. Language: R (85 swears, 2 ‘f’); Violence: G; Mature Content: G.

Kyra was gone for five years.  Surprise to her, because she thought she was just missing overnight.  But the world has moved on around her - her parents are divorced, her mother remarried, her father into alien hunting.  Her former boyfriend, Austin, is living with her former best friend away at college - the life Kyra and Austin had planned together.  Austin’s little brother is now all grown up.  As Kyra struggles to wring understanding out of the craziness that is now her life, she has absolutely no clue what the truth actually is.

If not for the high swear count, I would be much more enthusiastic about this book.  Dering’s deft plotting will fascinate readers and they will be carefully led to the truth of the matter.  As a follow up, give them Ultraviolet by R.J. Anderson.

HS - OPTIONAL.  Cindy, Library Teacher
