Pete the Cat: Too Cool for School -- ESSENTIAL

Dean, Kimberly and James Pete the Cat: Too Cool for School. HarperCollins, 2014. $3.99. Content: G

Pete wants to please everybody, so he asks around to find out what he should wear to school. Problem is, everyone likes something different. By the time he leaves his house he's wearing three shirts, a pair of pants, a pair of shorts, a tie, a baseball cap, and, well, just about everything else in his closet. When he realizes that depending on others for his own taste is a bad idea, he decides to pick out his own outfits from then on. "If you want to be cool," he realizes, "just be you!"

Students will enjoy watching Pete add layer after layer of clothing, as what seemed like a good idea turns into a disaster. While some may find the ending a bit preachy, the lesson is still a good one, and it leaves plenty of room for discussion.
