Pete the Cat: Old MacDonald Had a Farm by James Dean -- OPTIONAL

Dean, James Pete the Cat: Old MacDonald Had a Farm. PICTURE BOOK. HarperCollins 2014. $9.99. Content: G.

Pete-style illustrations accompany the lyrics to "Old MacDonald Had a Farm." Verses introduce cats, dogs, pigs, chickens, and ten other animals.

Fourteen different animals means fourteen different long, tedious, repetitious verses of "Old MacDonald Had a Farm." It takes a while, and by the eighth animal both adults and children will be secretly trying to figure out how many pages are left, no matter how cute James Dean's signature Pete the Cat illustrations may be. This book may work okay for young children who are learning animal sounds, especially if pages are skipped in order to suit their attention spans, but it is highly unlikely that it will hold the attention of older children for long, and it would be very tiresome to share with an entire class.

Pre-K -- OPTIONAL. Reviewer: Caryn
