Trucktown: Kat's Mystery Gift by Jon Scieszka - OPTIONAL

Scieszka, Jon  Trucktown: Kat’s Mystery Gift  Illustrated by David Shannon, Loren Long and David Gordon  Simon Spotlight, 2009.  $16.99  EARLY READER Content: G.

Kat has a gift and everybody is curious as to what is inside.  All of her friends take turns guessing: tires, flowers, or a new horn.  They all beg Kat to open up the mystery gift, but she doesn’t because that is what she likes about the gift—the mystery.

This is a colorful early reader and the characters are trucks, tractors and other fun construction equipment.  The sentences are basic with 1-2 sentences per page spread and the sentences are short and simple for new readers.  The story is a bit disappointing in the end when Kat won’t open the gift, but the buildup was too big and it wouldn’t have mattered what was inside.  Overall, it’s a simple story that young readers will feel successful reading.

EL (K-3)-OPTIONAL.  Reviewer, C. Peterson.
