Tatum
lives with her parents in the wide expanse of Alaska. She is obsessed with the
Iditarod and her dream is to participate in the major event with her father
someday. When Tatum decides to help a
new friend practice for an upcoming dogsledding race, weather conditions prove
to be unpredictable and the two of them end up fighting through a blizzard,
injuries, sick sled dogs, and minimal food to get back home.
This book could have massive appeal, but it
has a really slow start and once it gets going, the end is much too
abrupt. I was a little disappointed in
some of the more predictable aspects of the story. The sections in which Tatum
and her friend Cole brave the elements were definitely the most exciting parts
of the book, but I didn’t feel like they happened soon enough to get the story
going. I wanted more information at the
end of the story. I thought the
conclusion missed some interesting aspects of Tatum’s return home.
