Harper Colling, 2013.  $17.99.  PICTURE BOOK.  Splat can’t wait for the school field trip!  They are going to the zoo.  Splat loves the zoo but Splat especially loves the penguins.  Splats friend, Seymour the Mouse, wants to go to the zoo with the class. Splat won’t allow Seymour to come because he might frighten the elephants.  Seymour is disappointed when Splat leaves him home but is determined to find his own way to the zoo.  While at the zoo, the class visits the giraffes, the monkeys, and the elephants.  Splat waits impatiently for the chance to see the penguins.  An unexpected twist to the story creates mayhem at the zoo which shuts down the penguin exhibit.  Splat returns home disappointed at missing his chance to see his favorite animal.  But Splat is in for a big surprise and adventure in his own home when it ends up being “Penguin Day” after all.  The incredible illustrations in this fun book are big and bright.   All readers will thrill to see the pictures page after page.  This would be a fun book to read prior to actually going on a field trip to the zoo!We loved this book!  Pre-K.  EL (K-3).  ESSENTIAL.  Reviewer: SL
