A Very Witchy Spelling Bee by George Shannon –ESSENTIAL

Shannon, George and Illustrated by Fearing, Mark A Very Witchy Spelling Bee 32 pgs. HMH Books for Young Readers, 2013. $12.07.  Content: Language: G (0 swears); Mature Content: G ; Violence: G.

Cordelia is a little witch who is really good at spelling. She even practices her spelling right along with her spells! She enters a spelling bee against an evil old witch and finds out it will take all her bravery and creativity to keep in the competition.

This was a fantastic book, and would be really fun to read for story time! Students will find it a fun challenge to hear many of the words in the story spelled out loud and race to put the letters together into words. A reading of this could end in a fun group activity with spelling creativity! Students will also be drawn to the witch and spell aspect. I am already practicing my lesson planning for this school year, and this one is going to be fun! (and educational, of course!)
