Call Me Oklahoma! by Miriam Glassman -- ESSENTIAL

Glassman, Miriam Call Me Oklahoma! 123 pgs. Holiday House, 2013. Content: G. $16.95.

Inspired by her exuberant cousin, Paige resolves to make her fourth grade year her best ever. Unfortunately, changing who she is takes more than determination, a pair of red clogs, and a new name -- even if that name is the gutsy 'Oklahoma.' Good thing, as Paige's teacher points out, we all have many personalities inside, just waiting to be explored.

This is a wonderful and often inspiring tale of self-discovery and overcoming fear. While nothing truly awful happens to Paige and everything is easily resolved, the book still contains plenty of relatable issues, such as bullies, annoying siblings, and mad best friends. Paige is very likable and I found myself rooting for her, especially in the second half when she finally began to come into her own.
