The Visconti House by Elspeth Edgar-ADVISABLE

Edgar, Elsbeth, The Visconti House. Candlewick Press, 2011. Language: G, Violence: G, Sexual Content: G

Fourteen-year-old, Laura Horton has just moved into the house on the hill everyone calls the Visconti House. With a mysterious past and an even more mysterious previous owner, Laura begins to look into the house’s history. Soon, she finds herself aided by Leon Murphy, a curious, misunderstood boy in her grade who has an even more mysterious past than the house. Clues lead to a hidden love story, an eccentric owner, and a tragic event somewhere that links the two. Can the two figure out the mystery of the house and put their curious minds to rest? What really happened to the mysterious Mr. Visconti and his hidden love? What past haunts Leon? Are they somehow linked?

An intriguing, at times humorous, mystery story. The characters are likable and fun to follow in the story. The plot is intriguing and complex. Readers who like mystery, adventure, old houses, and friendship fiction will enjoy reading this book. EL (4-6), MS. ADVISABLE. Reviewer: Kira M, Youth Services Librarian, WHI Public Library.
