Sugar Changed the World by Marc Aronson-ADVISABLE

Sugar Changed the World: A Story of Magic, Spice, Slavery, Freedom, and ScienceAronson, Marc, Sugar Changed the World. Clarion Books, 2010. INFORMATION.

Cane Sugar was first cultivated in New Guinea nearly five thousand years ago. Since then, the harvesting and processing of sugar has greatly changed. There was a period in history, however, where slave labor was used to get sugar to those who could pay for it. This book takes a look at the history of sugar, slavery, and how the evolvement and increasing popularity of sugar shed light on slavery and helped to fuel abolitionism.

A well-researched, well-laid out book. The photos and illustrations greatly enhance the book. Readers interested in history and slavery will enjoy reading this book. EL (4-6), MS. ADVISABLE. Reviewer: Kira M, Youth Services Librarian, WHI Public Library.
