Captain Nobody by Dean Pitchford

Pitchford, Dean, Captain Nobody. G.P. Putnam’s Sons, 2009. Pgs. 195. Language: G, Sexual Content: G, Violence: G.

Newt Newman has always played second fiddle to his older brother, Chris, the star athlete. When a football accident leaves Chris in a coma and his parents distracted and absent from his life, Newt ends up starting to have to raise himself and rely on friends to get through the day. Will Newt find the strength within to help his family pull through? Can Newt shine even beneath his brother’s shadow?

An endearing, humorous story about finding one’s inner strength. The characters are well-developed and memorable. The plot is sad, but well-done. Readers in the latter part of 4th or 5th grade who like realistic fiction and stories that make you think will enjoy reading this book. EL (4-6). OPTIONAL.
